BLUE WHALES

Blue whales are the largest living animals in the world; their size goes from 25 to 33 meters long and their weight is over 190 tons. They live in the ocean except for the Arctic. Most of them live eight months in the southern Atlantic islands but in winter they migrate to warm waters. They live on krill; they can live until ninety years old if they are in good conditions but due to the fact of endangering they live approximately twenty five years. They reach maturity since they are ten years old and they can only get one calf per year.
Blue whales are endangered species because of chemicals, contaminants, and spilled oil that pollutes the water and their food, causing their early deaths. It also may reduce longevity and reproduction. Commercial whaling is the first cause of the extinction, because the hunters kill the whales for their bones, oil and meat, which they then sell for very high prices.
Moreover the shipping causes a lot of deaths; whales are run into the ships, provoking them several injuries. Another threat for the whales is the overfishing because of the fact that they entangle in the fishing nets so they suffocate and die. These are some of the reasons why nowadays the population of blue whales is less than 5000 specimens.
On the other hand some people are worried about this problem and they have made organizations that take care of the rights of the whales. They are creating laws that protect these animals and making people aware of this problem as well as asking support from the governments to protect these animals.
In my opinion, all of us should be conscious about this planet and all the living things in it. Because if we continue destroying and polluting like we do, in a few years not only will the whales be in danger but also human beings will be facing this danger of extinction. If we continue as we are, we will end up killing everything.
