The Name of the Rose

THE NAME OF THE ROSE

This film tells the story of a monk and his apprentice who start trying to solve a murder mystery set in an Italian monastery in the year 1327.

William of Baskerville (Sean Connery) is an astute Franciscan monk who has been sent to an abbey to solve the mysteries behind several murders. Along with Adso (Christian Slather), his apprentice, he finds a set of clues that lead him to the conclusion that the murders were connected with a millenary book written by Aristotle which talks about laughter.
William and Adso find out a lot of information and they get into trouble with the Inquisition. In the meantime, Adso falls in love with a poor girl who is a suspect of the inquisition for witchcraft. While our protagonists investigate the murders, they get to an extraordinary library where the books of many taboo topics are kept as secrets. Unfortunately at the end, the library burns down to ashes and all the valuable information is gone.

The cast is outstanding and the movie is interesting but kind of dark. It has a tragic and surprising ending. I didn’t expect the library to be burnt down. It is well worth seeing because the topics are strong and controversial. If you like movies which are about serious historical issues don’t miss it. Besides it’s exciting and moving.
